TOMAHAWKE CHALLENGE is OVER

(AKA. Suburban Sprawl Challenge)

I had a 100 dollar bill for the first person to find another subdivision like this one anywhere in the midwest.  Here were the rules:

Use Google Earth to search and see if you can find another subdivision that is larger than Tomahawkes 657 homes and farther away from a main business district.  It must be farther away than 4.3 miles from a Business district IE...Grocery store, McDonalds etc... and it has to be at least 2.6 miles from a four lane interstate. It must meet these three criteria.

Here are some tips to save time.  I have already searched KC, St Louis, Springfield and Wichita.  Scan around the cities edge looking for subdivisions then Zoom in to count the homes and look for Business districts(parking lots etc..).  The ruler at the top of Google earth will give you the measurements for mileage.  If you find something email it to me at V8fish67@yahoo.com, I will check it out and the first one to find something more screwed up than Tomahawke wins. There does not even have to be a Quarry across the street! Winner and location of subdivision will be posted on this website.

If no one can find a more isolated subdivision  after 2 years I think we can assume there is not one out there.

As of 4/14/10 No winner

A Legal fund has been set up at Wells Bank to handle some of the legal cost of fighting this subdivision.  If you would like to help please see Contact Tab for information on where to send check or Money order.

Lawsuit against Platte County DENIED(BEING APPEALED see bullitin board).

KC Annexation DENIED

For County lawsuit see Bulletin Board. Updated March 23, 2011

Feb 25th, 2010 the Kansas City City Council voted to deny Voluntary annexation of this subdivision into the city limits of KC MO. The only Council members voting for it were: ED Ford, Russ Johnson, Cindy Circo, Beth Gottstein and Mayor   A special Thanks to the council people who spoke up in opposition and they appeared to have a lot of common sense.  Jan Marcason, Bill Skaggs, John Sharp and Sharon Sanders Brooks all spoke up with factual comments about what Ford was trying to ram through.  Other members voting against this were Deb Hermann, Terry Riley, Cathy Jolly and Melba Curls.

Lake at Tomahawke Ridge Subdivision Hwy 92 and Winan Road

For the foreseeable future this website will be used to monitor progress and update everyone as to what is going on with the proposed High Density 657 home subdivision called Lake at Tomahawke Ridge. Should the project be allowed this website will be devoted to letting any possible real estate shoppers know of possible additional taxes in the subdivision, additional cost of fuel, plane traffic, accident information, problems with other subdivisions done by this developer and I will list other comparable subdivisions and homes closer to town in the same price range with their annual savings for not living in Tomahawke.

Currently Primary land owners Hal and Peggy Swaney along with Developer/Agent Tim Dougherty propose to develop a piece of property consisting of approx 300 acres located just east Winan Road and North of 92 Hwy.  They have had one "informational meeting" with local residents and their next step was to get new zoning passed so they can proceed to the county commissioners for approval. This was tried and they failed.  Currently the land is zoned RMD (residential multi dwelling). Lots are approx 70' across.  This will be a very dense subdivision.  On the new plat submitted in July all three drives on the north side of the subdivision now show being connected to the land behind this one which is currently farm land but zoned the same. All traffic will have to be handled by 92 Hwy, Interurban or Winan Road. KC MO would like to see both roads at least 22 feet(see traffic tab) to handle this amount of traffic but as the subdivision is outside of KC Mo they can only ask that the roads be widened. The Platte County Commission denied the application in 2008 for several different reasons.  The developers have now filed a lawsuit against the county basically saying the County Commission has no say in it  as the developers have met in their opinion all rules pertaining to the zoning they have asked for.  The developers have also done a 180 degree turn and are asking for annexation into KC MO even though they have already went to great lengths (letters to newspapers, ads, chamber meetings in Platte City etc..) to say almost all of the revenue from the subdivision will go to Platte City  NOT KC. Mo or Smithville.   Please see Tomahawke Challenge below to see why this would be one of the most isolated subdivisions if not the most isolated in the country.

This is a copy of the plat from the first application that was turned in to Platte County.
